PSU Works For New Hampshire

The following text is a message from President Steen. The official link to this message can be found here:

Two years ago, facing severe financial challenges in the midst of a prolonged recession, the New Hampshire General Court reduced the appropriation to the University System of New Hampshire (USNH) – Plymouth State University, the University of New Hampshire, Keene State College, and Granite State College – by 49%. Our state appropriation now represents approximately 6% of our operating budget. State support is reflected in our tuition rates and has a direct impact on New Hampshire students and their families.

I am joining the trustees of the University System of New Hampshire and the presidents of the University of New Hampshire, Keene State College and Granite State College to urge the General Court to restore the USNH appropriation to $100 million each for fiscal years 2014 and 2015, the same level as fiscal years 2009, 2010 and 2011, and to maintain the state’s important commitment to campus academic facilities. USNH pledges to freeze tuition for this period and increase financial aid for students in need.

As you read these pages describing how PSU and the University System of New Hampshire work for our state, I urge you to engage your legislators in conversation about the role higher education plays in the future of New Hampshire and the need to properly fund this important resource for New Hampshire’s future.

Please join the conversation about our partnership with New Hampshire.  You may also contact me at with any questions or comments.
